• Certainty of Suffering, Bill Hybels, Willow Creek Church, Illinois

  This tape was an analysis of the 4 chapter book of Phillipians. Therefore, only part of the tape dealt with the certainty of suffering. However, one point really spoke to me and that was the following:

  "Suffering,with dignity, may enable you to mark more lives for Christ than anything you say or do for Christ." Remember, God's power is perfected in weakness! These statements have truly affected my life and I thank Hybels for clearing up my role for Christ in this life.

• Evil and Human Suffering, Dr. Walter Martin, Christian Research Institute

This is a pretty intense tape! Martin speaks of God as love, who, "began the universe, permitted freedom, tolerates evil, programs redemption, will supervise judgement, and conquers all". "Evil came into the world because God is true love".
Here's how Martin explains this unbelievable statement: God gave free choice, Man chose to deny God, God wanted fellowship and true love with his creation, God knew he could not superimpose this love on a creature with free will, love only develops out of a desire by the individual motivated by free choice, therefore, some men would choose to love God, others would choose evil. God causes this evil to workout his sovereign purpose for mankind.

• Joy Through Suffering : A Personal Testimony; Joni Eareckson Tada;

Joni is so insightful, a real thinking person. It was great to hear her voice (I listened to the tape, instead of buying the book)! Wait till you hear her sing Amazing Grace at the end of the tape -- It will bring you to tears! Bottom line - the tape is excellent. Joni includes her testimony and bases this tape on I Thessalonians 5:18 - "In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you".

• Sickness, Suffering and the Sovereignty of God, Hank Hanegraaff, Christian Research Institute

Hank Hanegraaff, the infamous nationwide radio personality known as "The Bible Answer Man", attacks the faith movement teacher's out of context use of the Bible to address sickness and suffering. Hanegraaff cites 6 different Bible verses that are interpreted incorrectly by these false prophets, such as, Isaiah 53:5 "By his stripes we are healed". Isaiah 53:5 actually says we are healed in the context of our iniquities and trespasses - NOT OF OUR SICKNESS !!!!!
He quotes Spurgeon, "I am certain that I never did grow in grace one half so much anywhere as I have on the bed of pain". Overall, a fair tape at best - my expectations were much higher. The majority of the tape was an attack on the faith movement teachers, and all I really wanted was Hank's perspective of Christian Suffering. Of course, exposing false teachers is Hank's main ministry! However, the tape is helpful in that it warns each of us to take what we hear back to the Bible for comparison.
